How does a Kiss Change a Character?
That's a tricky and exciting question for author Sara Adrien...
Today, I shared something incredibly special with the paid subscribers of my Substack—the first kiss scene draft from my work in progress, Love Is A Draw. It’s an exclusive treat for those who truly immerse themselves in my stories and value the behind-the-scenes process.
Why just for subscribers? Because this intimate moment is not only part of the book but also part of the creative process we share together.
If you’ve ever wondered what it takes to breathe life into a hero or heroine, truly, here’s a little glimpse into my process.
Writing a compelling character means more than giving them a name and a backstory. It’s about understanding who they are at their core. What do they fear? What drives them forward when life gets difficult? A heroine’s passions might echo her dreams for freedom in a restrictive world, while her struggles might lie in reconciling the duty she shoulders with the love she hopes for. And the hero? He’s likely wrestling with the weight of society’s expectations or the scars of his past, even as he fights to protect those he loves.
I also consider how these characters change each other. That first kiss isn’t just a momentary spark; it reflects their growth, vulnerabilities, and the unique way they fit together. Each gesture, look, and word has to carry meaning. It’s these layers that make writing romance so rewarding.
And it has to sizzle.
Sparks fly.
Then some more!
Love has to be implicit.
Creating characters for a Regency romance is a delicate dance between historical authenticity and universal emotion. The societal norms of the era, from class expectations to marriage rituals, shape every character's decision. A heroine may struggle against the confines of her social standing while longing for independence, and a hero might find his sense of honor clashing with his desires. Balancing these constraints with the timeless themes of love and personal growth brings the story to life, allowing readers to connect with the characters as people while still immersing themselves in the beautiful world of the Regency period.
Paid subscribers, don’t forget to check your inbox for a peek at this draft, and feel free to tell me what you think! I love hearing your thoughts as these characters find their way onto the page. For everyone else, don’t worry. There’s more romance to come as we continue this Regency adventure.
Love Is A Draw is part of the Check Mates series, that’s already available here.
